As we age, our bodies make gradual changes. All these things are completely normal aspects of the aging process. It is easy to notice certain changes and jump to conclusions that something is wrong with your health. However, it is important to know what is normal and what to expect.

Here we give you a quick overview of the typical changes an aging body goes through. And, remember, some of these may apply to you while others will not. Everyone is different and will experience a combination of different aging effects.

Skin
An obvious change in the skin is the visual appearance of wrinkles. Along with fine lines, your skin is less elastic and produces less oil. This means it will probably be drier. Also, fingernail growth will most likely slow down, and your skin may be more sensitive. Protect your skin and keep signs of aging at bay by wearing sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, and protective clothing.

Memory
Obviously as we age, our memory isn’t as sharp as it used to be. It will usually take longer to remember new names or learn new things. This is a completely normal aspect of the aging process.

Height/Bones
Due to changes in posture, and compression of joints and spinal discs and bones, you can lose up to two inches in height by the time you reach 80. Since bones and joints shrink with age, they become weaker as well.

Vision
It is normal for people who reach middle age to all of a sudden need reading glasses, whether he/she needed glasses before. Likewise, in later years, your night vision and visual sharpness decline, resulting in a need for glasses. Glare may also affect your vision. Since all of these can affect your driving, be sure to regularly check your vision or schedule an eye appointment if you are experiencing problems.

Bladder and Urinary Tract
Loss of bladder control is a common symptom of aging. Certain medical conditions can make this worse, such as diabetes and menopause. Be sure to give yourself a schedule and try to go to the bathroom regularly. Being overweight and smoking will make this worse.

Sleep
Your natural circadian rhythm changes as you age. You probably have noticed you have adopted different sleep patterns throughout your life already. However, as you get older, you are probably going to sleep less at night and/or not sleep as deeply as you did before. Additionally, you are more likely to wake during the night or earlier than you used to.
Keep in mind that these symptoms or changes you or a loved one is experiencing are completely normal, and it will accordingly take time to adjust to them. While you may be in good health, there still may be some lifestyle changes you need to make in order to function better in your daily life. With a few changes, you can learn to embrace aging and live a new, but still fulfilling, chapter of your life!
